RAWQ Executive Director Alina Holmes was invited to participate in the Local Voices Symposium. Hosted by the Official Languages Consortium, this forum brought together members of minority official language community media and community organizations from across the country to bring together diverse expertise and engage in robust dialogue about the future and sustainability of our local community media. We were thrilled to be invited as a voice of the English-speaking Quebec communities.
Throughout the forum, focus groups reviewed statistical data on the consumption of local media (newspaper, radio, television) by official language minority communities across the country. This includes French speakers outside of Quebec, and English speakers in Quebec. RAWQ was pleased to be able to ensure the voice of the communities in our region was heard throughout these important conversations. We were also happy to note that our region has some of the best (in quantity and quality) local media in the country!
As always, we encourage everyone to engage with your local media – read/listen/watch, share with others, write in to the editor, post your events on their calendar, buy an ad, purchase a product. Without local media sharing local voices, the perspectives of our communities are at risk of not being heard. This risk is even greater for our English-speaking communities. If you are looking for ways to get involved, reach out to RAWQ at any time.
